Jonas
Jonas is the main protagonist, an 11 year old boy who you are first introduced to in the book anxiously awaiting the ceremony of 12, where he will get his job and life assignment. He wasn’t very sure what he would be placed as unlike most of his other classmates, since he didn’t have a specialty and enjoys different things. When the Ceremony of 12 finally comes, he as placed as “The Receiver of Memory” the most honored and mysterious job in the community, the head elder then gives a speech about Jonas saying he is Brave, Intelligent, Integrity, and he has the rare power to see beyond.

Other Characters
There are many supporting characters in the book. The ones that we mentioned were Asher, Fiona, Gabe, Jonas' parents and Lily.
Asher: Asher is Jonas’s ‘Best Friend’ too much to the displeasure of the authority figures in the community, does not take things seriously(is silly) and a bit clumsy, his job becomes Director of recreation.
Fiona: One of Jonas’s good friends who is kind and is very fond of caring for the old, and it’s no surprise her Job becomes Caretaker of them.
The Reciever of Memory (The Giver)
His true name is never revealed, because he tells Jonas to Call him the giver, now that Jonas is becoming the Receiver of Memory, he is giving Jonas what recollections of the past he has, that weighed him down for many years, causing him to look older than he actually is. The Giver is a mysterious man whose past is not really revealed thought the book; he (like Jonas) has the power to see beyond, and has gathered his opinions on the Community thought the years, more than some not positive.
Gabriel: A lovable new child that ‘temporarily’ joins Jonas’s family. Because he has issues with sleeping at night, and requires a lot of attention. He is always under the threat of release because of this.
Jonas’ Parents: His father a nurturer and his mother working in court, they are responsible parents that help and enjoy their children a lot.
Lily: Jonas’s younger sister who is a bit talkative and doesn’t really think before she says something. Her mother even suggests that her life assignment should be storyteller
